Great Newsome Brewery beat off strong competition to scoop the title “The World’s Best Bitter up to 5% ABV” for Frothingham Best, which takes its name from the hamlet in Holderness where it is based.

The annual awards takes entries from breweries all over the world including the USA, Canada, Germany, France and Japan and are blind-tasted by a panel of judges under the guidance of journalist and Good Beer Guide 2014 editor Roger Protz.

Matthew Hodgson, director of Great Newsome Brewery said: “I am still pinching myself. It is the first time we have entered any beer into a competition of this magnitude and to think a small brewery in the depths of East Yorkshire can beat off competition from all over the world is unbelievable.

“The brewery has been very busy and it is again a great pat on the back for the whole team and something that we can all be very proud of.”

The brewery, based on a working farm near Patrington, began exporting to Italy this year and Mr Hodgson said he hoped the award would help give them the edge when talking to other customers. The dark amber best bitter has been brewed by the brewery since 2008.

Despite the recession and the ongoing plight of pubs, independent breweries are booming.

The West Riding now tops the leader board for the most breweries in the country, with 57 all told.

There are now 1,147 breweries in the UK, a 14 per cent increase in the last 12 months.
