Chefs turn up the heat with flower show meal challenge

TRAINEE chefs are getting ready to test their culinary skills in a head-to-head cooking challenge.

Students from Leeds City and Harrogate Colleges will be dishing up their own master class as they race to create mouth-watering dishes in just 20 minutes at this year’s centenary Harrogate Autumn Flower Show.

Six up-and-coming chefs will be taking part in daily ready, steady cook-style contests as part of the popular Cookery Theatre demonstrations at the show from September 16 to 18.

Leeds City College students Jonathan Pratt, from Otley, and James Carden, from Moortown, Leeds, will be the first to compete on Friday September 16. Jonathan has just completed a summer placement with the famous Roux family at the Waterside Inn, Bray, and James comes fresh from success as a semi-finalist in the TV cooking competition, Britain’s Best Dish.

The line-up for Saturday, September 17, includes Joanne Rowsby, from Moortown, who, at just 15, is the youngest competitor.

Pitched against her will be Joe Hirst, from Ripon.

The final day of the show on Sunday, September 18, will see James Taylor, from Knaresborough, go head-to-head with Malcolm Bethell, from Ripon.
