Chefs turn up heat for Michelin stars

YORKSHIRE has again proved its credentials as a culinary capital after six top restaurants retained their Michelin stars.

It means the county has more Michelin stars than any other region outside London.

The Black Swan at Oldstead, Yorke Arms at Pateley Bridge, and the Burlington restaurant at Bolton Abbey retained their one-star rating alongside the Old Vicarage in Ridgeway near Sheffield, the Box Tree at Ilkley, and the Pipe and Glass Inn at South Dalton.

Old Vicarage chef Tessa Bramley said: “This will be the 15th year for us. Wherever you strive for excellence, you can never rest on your laurels. There is always another mountain to climb. Seasonal food is different from day to day, week to week; you are always doing something different.”

Husband and wife team Simon and Rena Gueller who own the Box Tree, said the 50th anniversary of the restaurant had been a year to remember. Mr Gueller, the executive chef, who has personally held a Michelin star for 13 years, said: “It’s been a great year for the restaurant and for our fantastic team, headed up by general manager Andrew Pratt and chef Dan Birk, who have worked hard to maintain our high standards of food and service.”

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, added his congratulations. “The county is the perfect kitchen larder with the best in meat, dairy, grains, cereal and seafood all in one place,” he noted.
