Chelsea Pensioner’s century of wisdom

Have your say

A CHELSEA Pensioner says “being happy with people” and staying away from alcohol and smoking has been the key to his long life as he celebrates his 100th birthday today.

Joe Britton – the oldest resident at Royal Chelsea Hospital – was joined by his family and fellow military veterans as he marked the milestone at the residential and nursing home in west London. The Second World War soldier appeared on TV screens in 2009, on game show Deal Or No Deal with Noel Edmonds, when he donated half of his £20,000 winnings to the hospital. He said: “I told Noel on the show that I’ve stayed healthy by chasing young girls. Well, I can’t catch them any more.

He said he had never acquired a taste for alcohol. “I’ve tried champagne, but it runs up your nose, and I’ve never tasted beer.”
