Cherie blossoms: Mrs Blair makes springtime return to her roots

Cherie Blair gets a warm welcome from Labour candidate Shahid Malik to Dewsbury yesterday where she spoke about her little-known local roots during a visit to a hospital.

The wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair apologised after arriving 90 minutes late in a chauffeur-driven Range Rover, saying she had been delayed during a visit to the Calder Valley constituency to see her father, the actor Tony Booth, and his wife Steph Booth – Mrs Blair's stepmother – who is also a Labour candidate.

Mrs Blair told Labour activists her great-grandfather came from Dewsbury but it was a 'family mystery' why he ended up in Liverpool, where she herself was brought up.
