Chernobyl children given a day on river aboard community boat

YORK'S Lord Mayor Sue Galloway will today welcome young victims of the aftermath of Chernobyl aboard the city's community boat as part of a month-long visit to Yorkshire to allow respite for their immune systems.

The vessel Isara is hosting the Chernobyl Children's Trust for a day on the River Ouse from 9.30am thanks to generous support from York's businesses.

Although the nuclear disaster took place in 1986, the Trust was set up only four years ago to help families and children who continue to be affected.

Barnitts have agreed to sponsor the trips and de'Clares Deli are providing picnics for the children and their carers. Greeting them will be the Lord Mayor Sue Galloway for the first trip from Isara's Museum Garden Moorings.

The Chernobyl Children's Trust aims to build a future for children whose lives have been devastated by the Chernobyl disaster and providing respite holidays and activities in the UK is part of its work.

A spokesman for the Isara said: "As one of the most well-known, independent and indeed essential establishments in York Isara are delighted to have the direct involvement of Barnitts for these trips.

"Many local charities and community groups have enjoyed trips on Isara over the last month and we are delighted to have the financial support of Barnitts to enable us to extend the chance for the children from Chernobyl to enjoy the life-enhancing benefits of this activity.

"Whilst on board they will be able to take advantage of the opportunities community boating offers, from learning about wildlife, to enjoying our art and cooking facilities to having the chance to steer the boat."

Isara approached de'Clare Deli as a renowned provider of gourmet picnics that both residents and visitors to York enjoy in the Museum Gardens.

A spokesman for the deli said: "It is a pleasure for de'Clare Deli to support the Chernobyl Children's Trust by giving the children the chance to enjoy a picnic with a real taste of Yorkshire"
