Chiefs beat Monkeys as rivals for music magazine awards

LEEDS band Kaiser Chiefs won the innovation in sound award at last night’s Q Awards, but Sheffield’s Arctic Monkeys were left disappointed after missing out in three categories.

Released in June, Kaiser Chiefs’ fourth album, The Future is Medieval, broke new ground in allowing fans to create their own version of the record by selecting 10 tracks from 20 available and designing their own cover artwork.

The Arctic Monkeys, whose fourth album, Suck It and See, was released in June, were shortlisted in the best album, best track and best act in the world today categories, but lost out to Bon Iver’s eponymous second album, Adele’s Rolling in the Deep, and Coldplay respectively.

Irish rock band U2 were honoured at the annual awards as the greatest act of the past 25 years, as voted for by readers of the music magazine.

The band are currently promoting a 20th anniversary re-release of their “rebirth album” Achtung Baby.

Elsewhere, Adele added to her best track success by winning best female artist, Gary Barlow was honoured for two decades of hits with the classic songwriter award and Brit Award-winning Tinie Tempah took home the best male artist prize.

Noel Gallagher, Biffy Clyro, Queen, Siouxsie Sioux, Jessie J, Snow Patrol and Fatboy Slim were among yesterday’s other winners at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
