Chilcot: Prescott to face Iraq war inquiry

Former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott is to be questioned by the Chilcot Inquiry into the Iraq War, it was announced yesterday.

Lord Prescott is among 35 witnesses listed to give evidence during a fresh round of hearings over the course of July, as the inquiry resumes public hearings after a break for the General Election.

Also due for a grilling are former Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth, UN weapons inspector Hans Blix, ex-MI5 director general Baroness Manningham-Buller and two former heads of the Army, Gen Sir Mike Jackson and Gen Sir Richard Dannatt.

The hearings will resume on June 29 and continue to July 30 at the Queen Elizabeth II conference centre in Westminster.

None of the witnesses in the latest round of hearings is being recalled. The inquiry has previously questioned witnesses including former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

The former deputy chief of defence staff, Lt Gen Andrew Figgures, will appear before the inquiry for a second time, but is giving evidence on a different subject.

No dates have yet been announced for Lord Prescott or other new witnesses to give evidence. Others due to be questioned include a string of military officers, diplomats and Whitehall officials.
