Children get insight into dark arts of the highwayman

YOUNGSTERS yesterday learned about the life of a highwayman in the first of a series of events which aim to bring history to life in the atmospheric surroundings of Bolsover Castle.

The English Heritage-owned attraction has hired actors for the summer and in yesterday’s event, children taking part enjoyed a musket drill, and were told stories about the life of the villains.

The highywaymen will remain in residence until Friday as part of the Time Travellers Go... series, then from Monday, August 8 until Friday August 12 the focus moves to more gruesome history.

Lynsey Coombs, English Heritage visitor operations manager said that, although not for the faint-hearted, the event would allow children to take a journey into the horrors of medieval disease, terrifying surgery and ghastly punishments from days gone by.

She added: “Time Travellers Go… events at Bolsover Castle take place from Monday to Friday every week throughout August, with a different theme each week.

“The events are run by colourful historic characters who bring history to life for children making it a memorable day out.”

An extra £1 is charged on top of normal admission charges to take part in the workshops.
