Children look into homes as part of firm’s anniversary

SCHOOLCHILDREN took a trip back in time to explore homes past and present as part of the 75th birthday celebrations of a firm which has created a new housing estate in Sheffield.

Home Group has carried out a vast regeneration scheme at the former Scowerdons estate, now known as RiseS12, and chose to mark its anniversary with children from the nearby Woodhouse West primary school.

Pupils took part in a “Homes Past and Present” workshop with staff from Museums Sheffield including Anita Hamlin, who grew up on the Scowerdons estate.

During the workshop, children were shown items from Museum Sheffield’s new metalwork handling collection, which has been developed to broaden access to the city’s internationally significant metalwork history.

The collection includes a wide variety of objects from cutlery to tableware, dating from the 1800s.

Teacher Liz Kirkham said: “The children were fascinated by all the different kinds of spoons and they had some great ideas about what they might be used for.

“They really enjoyed designing their own spoons for their favourite foods and it tied the whole workshop together nicely.”

Ms Hamlin added: “The children were fascinated by the objects and had lots of questions.

“It was great to be able to teach them more about how objects in the home have changed and also to be able to tell them about my memories of growing up on the Scowerdons estate at their age.

“We hope to be able to take our educational sessions round the city.”
