Children offered free health courses

Free healthy lifestyle courses are being offered from next month to youngsters in Sheffield, where one in three children are overweight.

The MEND programme aims to help the children become fitter, healthier and happier while demonstrating that exercise can be enjoyable.

The 10-week after-school programme will be held at the Concorde leisure centre, the English institute of sport and Handsworth Grange School, where children aged seven to 13 and their parents will learn about healthy eating and how to enjoy activity.

It runs for two hours per session. The course was devised by health experts at Great Ormond Street hospital and is funded by the Big Lottery.

Richard Tremere, MEND's Regional Manager for Sheffield, said: "The MEND programme is a fun way for children above a healthy weight to get fit and healthy and increase their self esteem. We offer a safe and non judgmental environment for families to learn about how to make healthy choices."
