Children's favourite will carry on, BBC pledges

Well-loved TV characters Igglepiggle, Upsy Daisy and Makka Pakka will live on, BBC chiefs insist.

It follows fears that In the Night Garden was coming to an end after its creator Andrew Davenport suggested its present format had run its course.

But the BBC said it was developing new shows for both digital and terrestrial television.

The managing director of Children's Global Brands at BBC Worldwide, Neil Ross Russell, said: "The rumoured demise of In the Night Garden has been premature to say the least. BBC Worldwide and Ragdoll, with the full support of Kay Benbow, controller of CBeebies, are actually in the process of developing exclusive new content which will see the characters continue in a variety of different formats."

The show, narrated by Sir Derek Jacobi, has become a children's classic and is shown in 35 countries including Spain, Canada and China.

It is described by its creators as "a happy world of loveable characters and nursery rhyme nonsense".
