Choirs find one voice for hospice

Choirs from across West Yorkshire will lift their voices to raise funds for a hospice.

More than 100 people, who make up the seven community choirs, will gather at St Mary’s Social Club and Parochial Hall in Batley on April 26 in a bid to boost funds for Kirkwood Hospice in Huddersfield. Hosted by the social club’s own Singing For Fun group, the concert will include choirs from Leeds and Wakefield.

Now in its sixth year, the group’s membership has grown from a handful of people to almost 40 today.

Social club secretary Denis Walsh said: “Not only is our own group tremendously enthusiastic about these concerts, and really looking forward to April 26, but we have always enjoyed tremendous support from other community singing groups throughout West Yorkshire.

“They come to sing, but because the work of the hospice is so important, they even make their own fundraising contribution, paying the same admission at the door as everyone else, including ourselves.

“So we’re hoping that we get
lots of people in the audience too to support this very worthy cause.”

Wakefield Cathedral Praise Singers, the Merrie City Singers and Outwood Community Choir will be joined by Gildersome Community Choir and the Yorkshire Broads from Leeds.
