Church clock ticks again as Archdeacon pays tribute

A SENIOR member of the clergy has paid tribute to the work of fundraisers who helped pay for the restoration of a landmark church clock in the heart of York.

The Archdeacon of York, the Venerable Richard Seed, yesterday re-dedicated the clock outside the Church of St Martin on Coney Street following the 10-month programme of work. The timepiece was taken down in November last year and taken to the Cumbria Clock Company workshops, near Penrith, for its biggest renovation since it was rebuilt and restored to the bombed church in 1966.

The Archdeacon said: “Churches hold so much of our heritage and history, and caring for and enhancing them is a task which congregations take on willingly. But it is expensive, and this work, which cost more than £54,000, would not have been possible without the support of local charitable trusts and feoffees. York would be so much poorer without it and future generations of residents and tourists will be pleased that so much care was taken to ensure that the best possible job was done.”

A clock has been in place over York’s busiest shopping street since 1668, and the current design dates from 1856. A naval figure, dubbed the “Little Admiral”, which stands on top of it revolves as it did in 1779 when it was first introduced.
