Church help for homeless extended

A PILOT scheme which offered shelter to homeless people in Bradford churches will also be launched in Shipley tomorrow.

The Inn Churches project, which was tried for the first time last year, saw a handful of congregations opening their doors to rough sleepers through the three coldest months.

Hundreds of volunteers will be involved in this year's scheme, which will begin again tomorrow alongside Shipley's new Inn Churches project.

Shawna Splawn, part of the team helping to co-ordinate the project, said: "What started out very small but was so exciting last year has just mushroomed. Bradford ticks so many boxes that are not good with poverty and crime and so on but there are people scattered over this city, who are often not especially visible, who are supporting people in need and giving of their services."

For seven nights a week throughout the winter homeless people will be fed and given a chance to wash and change their clothes, sleep in warm and safe surroundings and have breakfast.

Last year 56 people were cared for and half of them were found accommodation long after the project finished.
