Church makes spirited effort to encourage city fashions

ENGLAND’S largest parish church is to give Hull’s retailers some faith by hosting a fashion show.

Holy Trinity Church will stage the final parade of Hull Fashion Week on Saturday, April 30, and opened its doors to some of the models who will be taking part yesterday. It is thought to be the first time a church has played host to a fashion show.

The city centre manager of Hull’s business improvement district, Kathryn Shillito, said: “I’m very respectful of the fact that the church is first and foremost a place of worship, but we’ve got the backing of the trustees and we want to showcase the church and what it can be used for while boosting trade in the city.”

A series of events will begin on Monday April 25, featuring Hull’s three main shopping centres, independent retailers, major stores and local designers.

The Diocese of York’s spokeswoman, Eleanor Course, said: “We’re delighted that Holy Trinity Church is hosting the fashion show. It’s important for us that Holy Trinity is at the centre of its community and that’s why we are getting involved.

Churches down the centuries have been used for events other than services, such as medieval markets, so it’s not unusual for a church to host a community event, although a fashion show is out of the ordinary.”
