Church turns back clock for celebration

York residents Peri Hill, left, and Thomas Green take part in a day of song at St Mary’s Bishophill Junior Church under the guidance of Lisa Coates, a choir leader, singer and musicologist.

Little-known festive songs from the medieval period were brought to life with a concert at the city’s oldest surviving church to mark the 800th anniversary of York being granted a Royal charter.

The day of song was set to music by the Royal Philharmonic Society’s prize-winning composer Stef Conner and featured 13th century lyrics.

A musical ensemble called Lare Canteras also performed pieces spanning the city’s long history from the Dark Ages to the present day, including an Anglo-Saxon hymn and an Old Norse winter poem.
