Church's war memorial windows go missing

A BRADFORD church is appealing for the return of its lost war memorial.

The three stained glass panels, placed in the windows of St Margaret's Church, Thornbury, after the Second World War, were removed when the church was demolished in 1991. It was intended to display them in the new church, part of the Thornbury Centre opened in 1999, but they appear to have been mislaid.

Father Nicholas Clews said: "It seems amazing that three windows, possibly six feet high, could be mislaid. They are probably stored quite safely in some basement. Perhaps whoever has them does not even realise what they are."

A recently unearthed Press cutting from around 2001 revealed the glass was displayed in the Yorkshire Craft Centre in Bradford College and that it was to undergo a 3,000 restoration before returning to Thornbury. Father Clews is appealing for anyone with information to contact him on 01274 662735.
