Cities quiet as schools stay closed

Roads were eerily quiet during yesterday's morning rush hour as many people in West Yorkshire appeared to have stayed at home after the previous day's onslaught of snow.

With hundreds of schools remaining closed in Leeds and Bradford and some commuters turning to public transport for their journeys to work, Leeds city centre cut a stark contrast compared to Wednesday's scenes of traffic chaos.

Routes over the Pennines above Huddersfield remained shut yesterday, including the A635 Greenfield Road, the A640 Rochdale Road and the A6024 Woodhead Road. Leeds Bradford Airport re-opened yesterday morning. In Bradford, bin collections resumed from some side streets while others remained inaccessible.

Metro, the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority, warned people bus services would be likely to stick to main roads in some areas and to expect delays.
