City centre to be closed for motorists during cycle event

The centre of Hull will be closed to motorists on Sunday, August 21, when the city takes part in a national cycling event.

Hull is one of 15 cities in the UK that will be taking part in Sky Ride, an event which aims to encourage people to rediscover the pleasure of cycling.

The exact timings of the road closures have yet to be decided, but vehicles are likely to be barred for most of the day so cyclists can pedal in safety.

It is hoped hundreds of cyclists of all ages will take advantage.

Rachel Roberts, from Hull Council’s sports development team, said “Cycling is a great, fun way to lead a healthier lifestyle and it can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. As a city, Hull is perfect for cycling with its comprehensive network of cycling paths so I’m really excited about Sky Ride coming to the city.”

Lining the route will be bike-related stands and stalls and opportunities for refreshments and shopping.

Ms Roberts added: “Sky Ride isn’t a race, it’s a fun ride. You can go round the course as many times as you like. You can join or stop off at any point, say for a snack, shop and even visits to some of the land mark buildings such as the museums en route.

“We want people to take it at their own pace and enjoy a fabulous and free family day out.”

The council is working with British Cycling to encourage as many people as possible to rediscover the fun they can have on two wheels, and other events are being held.

At 10am on Sunday, a family bike ride from Hessle to North Ferriby foreshore will take place. Anyone wanting to take part on the seven-mile route can meet up at the Humber Bridge Country Park.

Another group will be cycling across the bridge from 2pm on Sunday. This will be a slow paced ride with opportunities to stop and take photographs.

There will be other events in the Wolds on Sunday, July 17, and between Hull, Kingswood and Cottingham on Sunday, July 24.
