City centre site could be used for allotments

THE site of Bradford's stalled £320m shopping centre could be used for urban allotments.

The 15-acre city centre site has been empty since demolition work began in 2004 to make way for Westfield to build the long-awaited development.

Last year the company said it would not be starting building work before 2010.

Bradford Council and Westfield are working with to develop alternative temporary uses including creating grassed areas.

Other ideas include seating, footpaths, a wild flower meadow, urban allotments and an area for outdoor theatre performances.

Bradford Council's assistant director for regeneration, Mike Cowlam, said the council and Westfield shared the frustration of local people and businesses.

He added: "Given the current economic climate it is unrealistic to expect development work to start in the near future, though Westfield and the council remain committed to the scheme."
