City of Culture sets stage for public celebration

A public celebration is to be held in Hull to thank residents for backing the City of Culture bid as the city begins the 1,000 day countdown to its big year.

The event will take place on Saturday, June 28, as part of the Lord Mayor’s Centenary celebrations.

Cultural events are scheduled for every single day throughout 2017 and an interim team is in place to set about the raising the £18m needed to stage the programme.

Councillor Steven Bayes, portfolio holder for City of Culture, said: “With 1,000 days to go until the start of City of Culture, this is an exciting time for everyone.

“For the City of Culture team, this year is all about planning, fundraising and laying the foundations for a successful year in 2017.

“As we move towards 2017, there will be lots of opportunities for everyone in the city to get involved. In the meantime, I would urge everyone to continue to support events and cultural activities that take place in the city.”

Councillor Bayes added: “Already, the benefits of Hull’s City of Culture status are tangible.”
