City cyclists offered internet updates

AN INTERNET campaign has been launched to promote cycling in one of Yorkshire's most congested cities and help prevent traffic tailbacks.

Officials behind the Cycling City York project have set up Facebook and Twitter online profiles to provide regular updates about events and activities.

Cyclists who sign up will then be sent alerts giving them latest information about the York scheme.

Cycling City York's marketing group leader, Robert Walker, said: "People lead busy lifestyles and choose to access information through a range of different mediums these days.

"We see the use of social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, as a really effective way of sharing information, particularly with younger people.

"Our long-term aim is to increase the number of people cycling in York and effective communication about the work we're doing is key to achieving that.

"If we want to encourage residents to be a part of Cycling City York, it's essential that we give them information in a medium that's easily accessible to them."

The Cycling City York project has received 3.68m from central government for improvements.
