City event aims to find summit of cycling

IT MAY be one of the flattest cities in the country, but Hull is to host an event aimed at finding Britain’s “perfect” cycling hill.

Sky Ride 2011, a free mass participation cycling event, will come to Hull on Sunday, August 21.

The project, which is backed by celebrity ambassadors including Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy, encourages people of all ages to ride around traffic-free streets at their own pace to rediscover the joy of cycling.

The nationwide search will see the ultimate cycling descent being crowned the UK’s perfect hill.

People can nominate their chosen hill, describing the location, views, where it takes them, its historical significance and what the hill means to them.

A panel of three judges including Sir Chris and Etain O’Carroll, editor of the Lonely Planet Cycling Guide, will shortlist entries and choose the winner.

Sir Chris said: “What makes a hill perfect to cycle down? Well, that’s up to you. It might be the amazing view from the top, the sense of achievement from getting there, the memories you have from riding down it, or the fact that it takes you to your favourite place – whatever hill springs to mind, we want to know and why.” To enter visit www.goskyride.com
