City given festive transport pledge

PUBLIC transport will be running in Sheffield throughout the Christmas period.

Sheffield Council and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive are arranging buses on both Boxing Day and New Year's Day, after the success of services in recent years.

On both bank holidays Stagecoach will operate buses between 9.30am and 6.30pm. This year there will also be 45 buses, compared with 34 last year.

The Cabinet member for transport at Sheffield Council, Ian Auckland, said: "This will be the third year in a row that we have brought festive bus services to the people of Sheffield. It's hard to remember that before then the city went 15 years without any public transport over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

"This year we have been able to extend the service even further again to make sure the people of Sheffield can get around the city over Christmas and New Year.

"Both football teams have fixtures on the festive bank holidays – United at home on Boxing Day and Wednesday on New Year's Day."

Supertram services will also be running on both Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
