City hit by smokescare outside store

Part of Sheffield city centre was cordoned off last night after a suspected fire at the John Lewis store in Barkers Pool.

Fire crews were called after one of the department store’s ground floor windows filled with smoke.

Pneumatic drills were used to remove paving slabs outside the shop and a smouldering substance similar to cardboard was found which may have been set alight by a cigarette.
