City to install maps for visitors

Work starts this week to install maps that will make it easier for visitors to find their way around Leeds city centre on foot.

Initial work has begun on the project which will see the “Walk-it” maps installed at 24 locations around the city. They are part of a set of new printed and on-line maps funded by Leeds City Council and Yorkshire Forward to encourage visitors enjoy the city centre shops, restaurants and cultural attractions.

They will be placed in and around the city’s pedestrian shopping area will signpost the bus station, railway station and eventually the Leeds Arena. They also feature images of some of the city centre’s principal buildings.

Councillor Richard Lewis, executive member responsible for city centre management, said: “Our research told us that there were too many different maps and signs around Leeds city centre, which made it difficult and confusing for people to find their way around.”

The printed maps are available free of charge at the Leeds Visitor Centre and they can also be seen online by clicking on the ‘how to get around’ link on the left of the www.citycentreleeds.com website.
