City makes further pledges to honour service personnel

HULL will take a further step towards honouring its commitment to serving and former members of the armed forces by announcing four initiatives tomorrow that will lead to service level agreements.

The move follows the signing last October of the City of Hull Armed Forces’ and Veterans’ Charter, which made Hull one of the most forces-friendly city in the country.

The four support “pathways” being developed are: help to find housing; access to health service treatment for conditions relating to service; access to advice on a range of issues including benefits, debt, housing and community care; and training, education and skills support for veterans who have left the forces.

A “Heroes Welcome” pack will also be unveiled which is aimed at businesses and other organisations and includes stickers and posters designed to show that support is available for returning service personnel.

Members are being invited to offer discretionary discounts to service personnel.

Lieutenant Colonel John Connelly, of 150 (Yorkshire) Transport Regiment, said: “Hull is exemplary in the way it has approached adopting its charter and the Community Covenant and in progressing the support pathways, in order to get as much appropriate support to veterans and their families as possible.

“If we can mobilise the business community behind the Heroes Welcome this would be another example of the city’s recognition of the work we do in the armed forces.”

Hull will hold its first Armed Forces Day on June 23.
