City marketing chief quits after just weeks

THE new chairman of the marketing organisation which promotes one of Yorkshire’s most popular destinations has resigned less than a month after he was appointed.

Visit York confirmed yesterday that Nick Cust had stepped down from the post which he took on at the start of April after the previous chairman, John Yeomans retired following four years in the role.

A Visit York spokeswoman said Mr Cust made the decision after he reviewed the “time commitment and availability needed” to fulfil his responsibilities as the tourism organisation’s chairman.

Mr Cust is the executive chairman of the York-based Amber Travel Partnership which includes Great Rail Journeys, Treyn Holidays and Rail Select. His firm is a market leader in escorted group rail holidays with more than 50,000 customers and a turnover of about £70m.

At the time of his appointment, he said his ambition was to build on York’s “world class reputation” and explore new global markets to boost the city’s tourism industry, which is worth £443m a year. Mr Cust, a married father-of-two, was awarded an OBE for services to tourism in 2009.

Keith Wood, the deputy chairman of Visit York, has taken on the role of acting chairman. The board of directors will meet on Monday to discuss plans to appoint a new chairman.
