City native appointed to post of university chaplain

A new chaplain has been appointed for Sheffield University's Christian community.

The Rev Jeremy Clines, currently chaplain at York St John University, will succeed Canon Will Lamb as Anglican chaplain at the university later this year after his appointment was ratified by the Bishop of Sheffield, Dr Steven Croft.

Mr Clines grew up in Sheffield, attended Tapton School and is a graduate of the University of Surrey in English and education studies. He also studied at Whitelands College in London and is a graduate of the University of Durham in theology.

The chaplain served his curacy in Birmingham city centre and has been chaplain at York St John since 1999. In his post he has been working in York with students and staff of the university and with the local faith communities.

He is married to wife Louise and they have a nine-month-old daughter called Esther. He said: "I and my family are delighted to be returning to my home city, I have enjoyed working at York St John University and will miss the place.

"As for the future though, I look forward to joining a chaplaincy team that is well equipped to serve the 25,000 students and 5,000 staff at Sheffield."

Mr Clines said he had various interests including how to relate religion to public and university life as well as caring for the earth and how to help the Church reflect such a concern in its worship.

The Diocese of Sheffield also announced yesterday that it was launching its annual drive to attract more people back to church as part of the Back To Church Sunday effort.

The bishop, Dr Croft, said more than 60 churches in the diocese had already committed to take part in the event in September and added: "The aim is quite simply to invite people to go back to church, particularly those who have lost touch with their local church for a whole host of reasons."
