City pedestrian hit by air gun pellet

A woman was hit in the head by an air gun pellet as while walking down a street in York, according to police who appealed for witnesses yesterday.

The 52-year-old victim needed hospital treatment but escaped with minor injuries in the attack in the Acomb area of the city. North Yorkshire Police have appealed for anyone else who might have been fired on to come forward.

The incident happened around 11.25am on Sunday as the local woman, who has not been named, was walking down Gale Lane, having just turned the corner from Front Street.

She sustained superficial injuries to her head and was taken to York District Hospital for treatment and allowed home.

Pc Suzanne Asquith, based in York, said yesterday: "Although the victim was not seriously injured it was understandably shocking for her.

"We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who has been targeted in similar circumstances to contact the police or Crimestoppers immediately."
