City plans to shut single-sex state schools

EDUCATION chiefs are to end to single-sex state schools in Leeds – with plans to close Parklands Girls' High.

Yesterday members of Leeds Council's executive board provisionally approved plans to publish statutory notices to close the school in Seacroft, together with both Primrose High and City of Leeds High and reopen two as academies.

Further talks will be held before the closures are finally agreed.

The planned closures are part of the city's response to a Government initiative which calls on local authorities to ensure that all schools have at least 30 per cent of pupils achieving five A* to C grades at GCSE.

Primrose High and City of Leeds High were falling short of this target.

Parklands Girls had exceeded it in its latest GCSE results last year but has had falling pupil numbers.
