‘City residents only’ rule on tip use

People from the East Riding have been banned from dumping their rubbish at tips in Hull.

City residents are being sent permits which will allow them exclusive access to the city’s three household waste recycling sites, as part of moves designed to save £120,000.

Hull Council says up to 4,000 tonnes of waste from outside the city is being off loaded in Hull. A survey showed that residents from outside the Hull area accounted for 29 per cent of site users at Wiltshire Road, 11 per cent at Burma Drive and 8.5 per cent at Sutton Fields.

Doug Sharp, Hull City Council’s assistant head of service for open spaces and waste said: “It’s not unusual for councils to restrict access to household waste sites to their own residents. This change in policy has been an integral part of the council’s wider review of service provision.”

Staff are on hand to explain the new arrangements.

The council says initially nobody will be refused access and any Hull resident arriving without the pass or proof of address will be politely reminded to bring them next time.

The sites are open seven days a week from 10am until 6pm.
