City sets up its first real ice rink along with German bar

SKATERS are set to take to the ice in Sheffield's Peace Gardens today to sample the city's first real rink.

Smaller, artificial rinks have been set up in places such as Barkers Pool in the past, but this is the first time a rink made from real ice has come to the city.

Measuring 25 metres by 15 metres and able to take up to 120 skaters at a time, the ice rink will be open until Thursday, December 23. Other attractions in the Peace Gardens include a Christmas market and a traditional German bar, serving beer until 9.30pm each night.

Meanwhile, the Christmas tree outside Sheffield Town Hall, which will have its lights switched on on Sunday has this year been gifted to The Children's Hospital Charity.

The charity is asking people to sponsor a light on the tree to raise money for the hospital's clinical research facility.

David Vernon-Edwards, director of The Children's Hospital Charity, said: "We are very grateful to the council for giving us the opportunity to turn the city Christmas tree into a tree of hope, which has the potential to change children's lives. By sponsoring a light, individuals and companies can give children with serious illnesses the hope that the life-saving cures of tomorrow are within reach today."
