City stages top athletics competition

OLYMPIC hopefuls from Hull will go up against other world class athletes from the UK and Poland later this month when the city stages its highest level athletics meeting since 1975.

Kingston upon Hull Athletics Club will compete against visiting teams from south of the Humber, the East Midlands, a UK guest team and Klub Sportowy AGROS Zamosc from Poland at Costello Stadium on Sunday.

The event, which is free to attend, is part of Hull Gold 2102 and will see an attempt at a new UK record in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase.

Also taking part will be East Hull hammer thrower Alex Smith, ranked number one in the UK, who won silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

He has to throw 74 metres at two separate qualifying events before the end of June to be available for selection for the Great Britain team.

Hull’s Great Britain under-23 sprinter Annabelle Lewis will compete in the women’s 100 metres sprint.

Visiting athletes include Anita Wlodarczyk, a former world record holder in the women’s hammer, and Konrad Partyka, an under-20 European championship silver medallist.
