City steals show with crime summit

THE first ever crime summit in York is taking place today in a bid to bring offenders in the city to justice.

York Council has arranged the summit to bring residents, authorities and businesses closer together to tackle crime, while workshops will also be held on anti-social behaviour, serious acquisitive crime and domestic violence, as well as how the voluntary and community sector can contribute to safety.

Police officers, trading standards officers and the fire service will be on hand to provide crime prevention advice, support and general information throughout the day.

Coun Sandy Fraser, cabinet member for crime and community safety, said: “We want criminals to know that we’re committed to tackling crime in our city and holding York’s first ever crime summit is giving all the key authorities and organisations in the city a voice along with the city’s residents.

“We want everyone to get involved in the city centre and feed back any concerns or ideas so we can collectively sort these out.”

The summit runs from 10am to 2.30pm at Bar Convent, with events also taking place elsewhere in the city.
