City subway sealed off amid scare over missing girl, 15

PART of a subway in Sheffield city centre was cordoned off with police tape during yesterday morning’s rush hour after an investigation was launched when a 15-year-old girl was reported missing in the early hours.

Detectives were called in after the teenager, who had been out in Sheffield with her sister on Sunday night, became separated from her group and then disappeared after last being seen near the city’s branch of department store TJ Hughes.

A walkway and a flight of steps between Arundel Gate and the city’s transport interchange in Flat Street were sealed off by officers shortly after the girl was reported missing by her friends.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed a shoe had been found which officers thought may have belonged to the girl after searching near the O2 Academy music venue. The area was then sealed off for further examination as a result of the discovery.

Commuters were unable to use the walkway, which was guarded by police community support officers, and were diverted around the scene.

Officers also studied CCTV images taken around the city centre early on Sunday morning in a bid to find out what had happened to the girl. The cordon was removed after the teenager was discovered safe and well at lunchtime yesterday.

The police spokesman said: “The 15 year-old girl who was reported missing after she became separated from her sister just after midnight has now been found safe and well.

“Officers sealed off the walkway as a precaution after finding an item of clothing.”
