City Tories lose seat to Labour in by-election

A LOCAL authority by-election resulted in Labour taking a seat from the Conservatives on Wakefield Council.

Labour’s Janet Holmes gained from the Tories in the Horbury and South Ossett ward, building on her party’s majority in May in the local elections.

The seat was left vacant following the resignation of Coun Elizabeth Hick in May because of ill health.

The make-up of Wakefield Council is now Labour 40 seats, Conservatives 20 and Independents three.

Labour polled 1,776 votes, with the Tories in second place with 1,061.
