City welcome for heroes returning from Afghanistan

HUNDREDS of soldiers marched through the streets of York yesterday to mark their homecoming after a gruelling five-month tour of Afghanistan.

The 300 troops from 2nd Signals Regiment, who returned from operational duty on Saturday, were cheered by crowds of well-wishers as they paraded through the city centre.

They were also presented with their operational service medals by the Lord Mayor of York, Coun Sue Galloway, during a ceremony in Duncombe Place.

Among those who were taking part in the parade was Lance Corporal Michael Day, who had a belated Christmas present to look forward to.

He had organised the delivery of a new Mercedes coup for when he returned to the UK.

L/Cpl Day, 23, from Leeds, said: "I am happy to be back – it was tough at times but my brother, Steven, was out there too with 2nd Signal Regiment, which really helped especially at Christmas. He came back a bit sooner than me, so I am looking forward to catching up with him and driving my new Mercedes."

The soldiers, who are based at Imphal Barracks in York, were involved with establishing and maintaining the Army's communication networks in Afghanistan.

L/Cpl Gareth Stanley, 20, from Wakefield, said: "We achieved a lot, but it was difficult at times because their living conditions are so different to what you are used to."

The commander of 2nd Signals Regiment, Lt Col Andy Knott, paid tribute to the troops, and added: "I am extremely pleased we all got home safely."
