City’s first Chelsea show gold medal winner put on display

Visitors to a Leeds park can now see the garden which won the city its first gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show.

The HESCO Garden 2010 together with its predecessor from 2009, The HESCO Garden, have been permanently relocated into the Gardens of the World section of Roundhay Park.

They were officially opened at a ceremony hosted by the Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor James McKenna yesterday. Both gardens were created by Leeds Council’s parks and countryside service supported and fully sponsored by the Leeds-based company HESCO Bastion Limited.

The opening honoured HESCO Bastion owner Jimi Heselden, who died in September last year.

Cllr James McKenna was joined by the family of Mr Heselden and BBC television gardening presenter Christine Walkden.

The gardens have been positioned alongside each other and next to the 2008 Largest Room in the House Chelsea war memorial garden, meaning the public will now be able to see three award-winning Chelsea Flower Show gardens together for free in a way not seen anywhere else in the country.

Both The HESCO Garden in 2009 and The HESCO Garden 2010 proved major hits at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The HESCO Garden from 2009 won a Silver Gilt Flora award.
