Civic figures mark 90th birthdays

THE landmark birthdays of two leading figures in York’s civic life were celebrated yesterday after they turned 90 within days of each other.

Friends, family and political colleagues of a former Lord Mayor of York, Cyril Waite, and a former Lady Mayoress, Dolly Cooper, gathered for the birthday celebrations in the Exhibition pub in Bootham. Mr Waite was 90 on the previous Sunday, while Mrs Cooper celebrated her own birthday on Tuesday last week.

However, Mrs Cooper was unable to attend yesterday’s celebrations as she was admitted to York Hospital on Thursday last week.

Coun Sandy Fraser, who organised the event along with fellow Labour councillor Brian Watson, said: “We decided to go ahead with the event and we raised a glass to Dolly and hope that she is out of hospital soon. Both Dolly and Cyril have contributed so much to York that we wanted to do something special to mark their birthdays.”

Mr Waite is also an Honorary Alderman of York, and Mrs Cooper was the wife of the late Ken Cooper, who was a Lord Mayor of York during the 1980s.
