Civilian in police jobs row drops sacking claim

A CIVILIAN worker sacked over the North Yorkshire Police recruitment scandal has withdrawn her claim for unfair dismissal.

Susan Matthews, who worked in the human resources department, was due to have her claim heard at an employment tribunal but has now ended her legal action.

Ms Matthews was one of two civilian members of staff dismissed for gross misconduct last year over allegations they abused their positions for their own gain during a recruitment drive for new police constables.

North Yorkshire’s chief constable, Grahame Maxwell, received a final written warning earlier this year after admitting gross misconduct over his attempts to help a relative during the same process.

Ms Matthews said she was ending the action, which included a claim she had been treated unfairly in comparison to Mr Maxwell, because of prohibitive costs.

She said: “I have been advised that even if I were to win the case any award I would receive would not cover the legal costs so I have reluctantly had to end the action.

“But I remain convinced I was treated unfairly and disproportionately compared to much more senior staff at the force.”

The force declined to respond to Ms Matthews’ comments.
