Clash over extension plans for care home

PLANS to increase the size of a care home by a third have sparked off a row in a suburb of Sheffield, as nearby residents protest about loss of privacy and sunlight.

Ecclesfield Parish Council received an outline planning application for the extensions at Nightingales Residential Care Home in Nether Lane, Ecclesfield. The application is for an extension to form an additional storey to the front and mid-sections of the building, to provide an additional 12 bedrooms and ancillary accommodation.

The parish council's planning committee was told of six nearby residents who were expressing serious concern about the application.

Those residents claimed that the development would overshadow their homes, with rooms overlooking their bedrooms resulting in loss of privacy, and that their homes and gardens would lose sunlight for long periods in the day.

Parish council chairman Norman Garratt said: "There is enough land at the side to build this extension rather than add another storey and affect the privacy of nearby residents. I can understand why they are so concerned."

Planning committee chairman John Bowden added: "Adding a third storey to this building will cause serious problems for people living nearby.

“There is no need for this because there is enough land at the side of this home for the extension.

"It will be very intrusive and we must support these residents because it will adversely affect their quality of life."

Ecclesfield Parish Council is now set to inform Sheffield Council that it will object to the planning application.

A final decision on the proposals will be made by the city council’s west and north planning and highways committee at a later date.
