Clean-up clears over 40 tonnes of rubbish

A COUNCIL-funded clean-up operation to help residents dispose of bulky items of waste removed more than 45 tonnes of rubbish from a neighbourhood in Hull.

A further seven tonnes were sent for recycling and 52 fridges were removed during the four-day initiative in July and August in the St Andrew’s ward.

The £1,500 cost of the project was funded from ward budgets and is not available in all areas of the city.

Daren Hale, ward councillor and deputy council leader, said: “These Bring Out Your Rubbish Days are a good opportunity for residents’ to recycle and dispose of any unwanted items for free, which in turn reduces the amount of fly-tipping and makes the area a better place to live.”

Residents in the city’s Boothferry ward are being invited to take part in a similar initiative on Saturday.

Excess household waste can also be deposited at the council’s three main recycling centres, at Sutton Fields, Wiltshire Road, and Burma Drive.

Latest figures show 57 per cent of household waste was being recycled in the city in July.
