Clean sweep for football volunteers

Volunteers got up at dawn yesterday to clear a patch of litter-strewn land to allow children to play football and meet Leeds United plater Alex Bruce and Neil Collins.

The improvement of Beggar’s Hill near Leeds United’s Elland Road ground was completed by 72 volunteers with Home Team Heroes, a project organised by npower, sponsors of the Football League.

The 72, one representing each of the Football League sides, cleared away litter and installed a new ‘ball wall’ and goal posts.

Afterwards, the players – and coaches – from Leeds United pulled on their boots to teach children a few new football skills.

Home Team Heroes is a 2m scheme to help communities living near the 72 clubs’ home grounds.

Greg Clarke, chairman of The Football League, said: “Through the Home Team Heroes programme our clubs will be actively engaging with local children to encourage them to get involved in football.”

An npower spokeswoman said they were sponsoring the programme to try to make a difference for local communities. “It’s heartening to see so many people from Leeds involved,” she added.
