Clean-up warning for dog owners

PET owners are being warned they face on-the-spot fines and a criminal prosecution as a campaign is launched today to combat dog-fouling.

Officials from the district councils covering Hambleton and Richmondshire are launching the crackdown to combat the problem which has escalated recently.

Five new posters are being displayed on notice boards across the two districts urging dog walkers to clean up after their pets. They show how everyday activities can be ruined by dog-fouling, with images including a child picking up a dummy embedded in excrement and a woman's evening shoes ruined.

The head of waste services for Hambleton and Richmondshire councils, Eric Kendall, said: "Our posters may be shocking but it is shocking how many people fail to clean up after their pets.

"Not only does it ruin people's days but it is a health hazard – dog poo carries lethal parasites that can leave people very ill.

"We are determined to crack down on the thoughtless pet owners who fail to clean up, but we need people who see this happening not to be afraid and dish the dirt."
