Clinic helps fitness enthusiast get back in the dance without need for spine op

KATE INGATESTONE is passionate about fitness and dance but feared she may have lost her dancing feet forever after she was diagnosed with a severe curve in her spine.

Doctors said her condition was so severe that she would need major spinal surgery but after learning about an intensive exercise programme she has turned a corner and is now back dancing again.

The 29-year-old, from York, who works in finance and enjoys tap, ballroom and jazz dancing, was initially told she only had a mild form of scoliosis.

But within two years the fitness and dance lover was in such severe pain that she found it hard to sit or stand and her only option was to have surgery.

She said: “I was 27 when I was first diagnosed with the condition, which is hardly any age to start feeling like a cripple.

“I am just extremely glad the problem is resolved and I have my dancing feet back.”

Her family GP diagnosed scoliosis, a condition which causes the spine to excessively curve sideways.

She was told her condition was fairly mild at the time but little did she know that the pain would later become so excruciating that within two years she was faced with the real possibility of needing surgery.

The pain was to become so consuming that she struggled to sit down and stand.

In a last attempt to find a solution, she discovered Scoliosis SOS, a clinic based in London, by chance.

Founded and run by Erika Maude, the clinic offers a programme of non-surgical treatments.

It creates a programme of specially-tailored exercises using a number of techniques such as osteopathy. They are designed
to strengthen the muscles
around the spine and improve posture.

She was booked into a four-week treatment course and has not looked back since.

“I feel like I am back in control and I am getting used to being able to dance again without collapsing in agony,” she added.
