Clock ticks towards first Peaks Walk For All event

FINAL preparations are well under way for the first ever Peaks Walk For All, which will be held in stunning countryside around the Peak District’s Hope Valley in little over a week’s time.

However, the clock is also ticking for those wishing to tackle either the five-mile, 12-mile or 24-mile routes, which all begin at Hope sports field and take in sights including Kinder Scout, Edale and Jacob’s Ladder.

Entry is still open for those wishing to register for any of the three walks, which take place on Sunday, April 29.

Those who want to clinch a last-minute place should visit the website – www.forallevents.co.uk – where they can sign up and also register for special charity train tickets through Northern Rail.

Early weather forecasts suggest that the skies will be cloudy a week on Sunday and there will also be light showers, with temperatures peaking at around 12C during the afternoon.

Funds raised through the Peaks Walk For All event will go not just to the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, but also to other selected charities such as Edale Mountain Rescue, Diabetes UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Breast Cancer Campaign, Heart Research UK, the Friends of the Peak District and Cash For Kids.

A spokesman for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal said: “With distances suitable for everyone, participants will have the opportunity to either take on a marathon challenge or simply enjoy a steady stroll with friends and family.”

So far the 12-mile distance, which takes in sights including Win Hill and Edale, is proving to be the most popular of the three walks.

The event has been scheduled to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the mass trespass on Kinder Scout, which has been described as the most significant event in the fight for the “right to roam” through Britain’s countryside.

The spokesman added: “The Peak District walk follows the success of last year’s Yorkshire Dales Walking Festival in Settle, which saw 2,500 people enjoy the day.

“Thanks to support from official tourist board Visit Peak District & Derbyshire and the Peak District National Park, the Walk For All will be the blue ribbon event in the Peak District Walking and Outdoor Festival 2012.”
