Club shut by police after late-night violence

Mansion, in Huddersfield town centre's Beast Market, has been closed because of police concerns about disorder.

Officers also closed the nearby Boy and Barrel pub during an investigation into licences.

Six people suffered stab wounds outside the Mansion club in the early hours of New Year's Day.

Inspector Adrian Waugh, of Huddersfield south neighbourhood policing team, said several licensing breaches.

And, he said there had been other problems relating to the venue which had culminated in the violence.

The club, which used to be called Johnny's, was hosting a party when violence broke out at around 2am. Trouble flared inside the club and then spilled outside.

Two men who suffered serious stab wounds are still recovering in hospital after being treated in intensive care.

Officers arrested a man, 29, from Birmingham in connection with the trouble. He has since been released on police bail.

The police are to present their concerns about the premises to a committee of councillors, who can endorse the move or reject the decision to close it.

The long-term future of the club will be subject to a full review.

Insp Waugh added: "Our message is that, as soon as there is any disorder at premises in Huddersfield, we will clamp down on it very firmly.

"This type of incident is preventable if people stick to the licensing laws.

"We want licensees to work with us so that the town centre can remain a vibrant, safe place to have a night out."

The action by West Yorkshire Police follows similar clampdowns on problem clubs in Leeds.

Last month, two city nightclubs were closed following problems with drugs and violence and councillors backed the police decision to temporarily suspend both licences.
