Coast building project to deliver affordable homes

MORE affordable housing is on its way to the North Yorkshire coast amid growing concern about young couples being priced out of the market in tourist honeypots.

A scheme at Middlewood Crescent, Fylingthorpe, near Robin Hood's Bay, will provide eight new homes for rent and two low cost homes for sale, built on land provided by Scarborough Council.

Parish councillor Wendy Weekes said: "We are 100 per cent in favour of this new affordable housing scheme, which will provide high quality homes for residents in need and benefit the local community."

The new development, which should be complete by the end of the year, is by the Home Group.

Project manager Amber Boston said: "We have worked closely with North York Moors National Park Authority in order to design a sensitive scheme, fitting for this stunning rural location.

"The homes are highly energy efficient, benefiting from a number of energy saving features including solar panels and water saving devices, which will keep running costs down."

A 2007 study highlighted a shortage of 34 affordable homes over five years across the parish.

A local housing group was set up to include parish councillors, Fylingdales Villages Trust and residents working with an arm of Scarborough Council set up to deliver rural homes.

Home Group is currently developing another site for affordable housing at Byland Road in Whitby, which will provide five two bedroomed homes.

The council's portfolio holder for housing Jonathan Dixon, said: "We recognised Whitby and the surrounding area had the most severe affordable housing shortage and the work put in by all partners in recent years to bring forward sites is now bearing fruit."
